on art, being terrible, and the beginner’s mind

I’m waiting for 4 pm so that I can get busy with a call with one of the Craftsy folks I’m working alongside right now; we’re working on scripting this week, which is more fun than it sounds like, really, especially the second time around. I’ve been testing dye recipes this week, which is exactly as messy, fun, and occasionally…

on stress making (you can make it a part of your life, too)

I’d promised to post a recipe for that whipped body butter on the blog late last week, and I wanted to get that up here before I got too busy and it slipped my mind. I’ve been playing around with a version that eliminates the coconut oil, and I have a butter & oils order en route that I’m looking forward to using in a few experiments, but here’s the basic idea. There’s a lot of room for improvisation here- really, this is more “notes” than a recipe, but I’ve given you the bare bones, and you can play with substituting different elements once you’ve given it a trial run.

in which we are building community

Don’t know how to knit yet? That’s fine! Experienced knitters (like me!) will be on hand to teach you how, and Lion Brand has donated 50 free knitting kits. Come learn the incredibly dark rhyme I use to teach knitting- it is literally the only way I know how to teach people and have this stick, but it really, really works. (Once you hear it, you’ll remember it.)

in which there is anticipation (and pizza)

The crickets are out and the dogs are fed; the cats are quietly pushing at their bowls in the corner of the kitchen, trying to manifest more food now that they’ve finished the clearly inadequate dinner I just gave them. My hands smell like cedarwood oil: I’ve been dabbing it on my spindles and needles this afternoon, along the hoosier…

in which there is more of this palette business

I know, there was no List last Friday. Not for a lack of Very Good Things, either, but more that I was spending my day in the midst of them and got a little carried away. Friday was for family, and then the weekend became terribly exciting, and so now here we are. This week’s List will just be a…

in which there is a list

I’ve been thinking of adding back my lists of Very Good Things on Fridays– something to finish up the week, a bit of reflection. I recently came across the notebook I used to keep the lists in- a gift from my friend Katey J- and I miss the practice. It keeps getting search hits so it’s obviously something I need to…

in which we talk around and about fear

When I logged on this afternoon I had intended to lay down the bones of the skin care post, but two sentences in that just felt wrong- dishonest in a “well, this isn’t what I’m here for today” kind of way. If you write, you know what I mean: it’s a bit like being in a conversation where all you’re actually accomplishing…

on attachment, clearing out, and hey, who wants yarn?

I thought this was going to a lot harder than it has been, to be frank. As I’ve been shipping things out, I’ve been feeling really good about creating space, and it just gets easier and easier to put things in the “destash” pile. I’d originally suspected I’d struggle with relinquishing CY yarns, especially tests, out of sentimentality: this is…

in which I’m still on about this yarn thing, and also drugs

Hey there, Word Lily— drop me an email when you get a second!  You’ve got yarn coming your way; the Random Number Generator chose you this week! Send me your mailing address and a good Paypal address for shipping costs and we will be in business. I’ve shipped out the first two waves of Destash, and added some more things to the…

about that giveaway, though…

Shoshana, you recommended Ardent, by Janina Kallio— and you were also selected by the Random Number Generator! Would you send me your address, please, as well as a good paypal email address so I can hit you up for shipping? Sorry it took me an extra day to make the announcement! I spent a bit of this afternoon visiting Kate…
