in which I’m still on about this yarn thing, and also drugs

Hey there, Word Lilydrop me an email when you get a second!  You’ve got yarn coming your way; the Random Number Generator chose you this week! Send me your mailing address and a good Paypal address for shipping costs and we will be in business.

I’ve shipped out the first two waves of Destash, and added some more things to the Etsy Destash shop. I’m surprised at how much I’ve managed to get out of the house already, and how little of a dent I’ve managed to make in the overall mass. The real issue is how non- intuitive the Etsy Seller’s format is; there’s no ability to create a template, which really slows things down. Not the end of the world, but boof, these updates. Luckily, I have a healthy Netflix queue to help me along (I’m looking at you, Sense8), but I’d be lost without a little enhancement.

Stash talk aside, I had a minor bit of housekeeping I wanted to do: some folks had asked me for a Gilenya update now that it’s been almost two years since I started the drug. I’m still a little surprised that it’s actually been that long— time flies, right?— but sure enough it was July of ’13.  So for my MS/ Gilenya folks: I’d said I wasn’t going to pass judgement until 6 months had passed, and here it is, two years later. What do I think?

It’s a lot better (for me) than Copaxone was. Zero relapses in two years vs an annual spring relapse on C. Some symptom progression and the addition of side meds, but I’ve adjusted with lifestyle changes (some of which were far overdue) and PT. I did notice a low/ dull headache, fatigue, and some nausea in the beginning but moved my dose to bedtime and after that, zero side effects after the first two weeks. My heart rate did get lower but I’m naturally bradycardiac (healthily) so no big. No dizzy spells, and blood pressure is cool.

Yeah, I heard about the PML cases and I’m not worried about it; lots of folks have been on different treatments before taking Gilenya, we still don’t know if the Gilenya PML cases took Tsyabri or Techfidera (or if they had been tested for JC). Also, we now know that PML isn’t always the death sentence we’ve been told it was, and while I’m definitely not looking to take any chances, I’m also not leaving the disease- modifying therapy that’s working best for my body at the moment over a .001% not- always- lethal chance.

There’s the obvious plus of it being a pill, as well; after years of self- administering shots I’m not injection- averse, but transporting meds is so compact & easy now, and hugging people is a lot less painful, too.

All the standard disclaimers: I am not a doctor or any other medical professional, your body is completely different from my body and your disease is not my disease, either, etc, etc. Still, it’s working out for me. I’m into it. I have a weird- looking, birth control looking pack of pills that don’t make me feel any kind of way and supposedly keep my disease in some kind of check. They don’t make me feel like I can’t breathe and like my chest might be caving in every six weeks, like Copaxone did. I don’t have relapses, or at least, I haven’t in a while, and that’s pretty rad. My disease is definitely progressing, but it’s very, very slow, and I’m as okay with that as I can be.

Last piece of housekeeping: the next giveaway! This time around I have a very slightly spotted skein of Skinny Bugga in Blue- Ringed Octopus. It’s marked Irregular, and I’m giving it away because the spot is so, so obvious- it’s red, against that pale Tiffany blue, so you’d almost positively have to cut it out. That said: it’s just the one spot as far as I can see, so hey, give this little guy a home, would ya?

When it comes down it it, we are all a little irregular, aren't we?

When it comes down it it, aren’t we all a little irregular?

Today it’s easy: I need something free to watch while I’m packing orders or listing yarn on Etsy. If it’s on Amazon Prime, Hulu, Netflix or any of the standard free channels on Roku and it’s awesome, recommend it in the comments! I’ll Random Number Generator it on Tuesday for a winner. Good luck, everybody!

Since the trailer for the new Heroes series just came out, why not rewatch from the beginning?

  2. June 25, 2015 at 8:24 pm

Darling, have you watched Pinky Blinders yet? (Netflix)

I’m really enjoying Orphan Black. It’s a bit too intense/suspenseful for me, but I’m pretty wowed at how well the actress plays so many characters.

Etsy idea: Create a sort of “template” listing, save it as a “draft.” Then, go back and “copy” your “draft,” make any changes you want, and then “publish” that new listing. (Do not publish the draft. It’s, ummm, just drafty.) That way you can reuse your draft, just tweaking as you go.

You can have many drafts, one for each weight or whatever, and then edit as necessary … rather than re-writing.

I have used up my daily limit of quotation marks, so will close now. Oh, Etsy, why do you do us like this?

If you like the British Mysteries try Inspector Morse–a lot of episodes!

Midsomer Murders on Netflix is good background noise for me. Not too gory and the confessions are very long and detailed so you don’t really have to pay attention.

The Missing was good, and so was Witnesses (though this one is subtitled).

Glad your meds are working for you! I have Reactive Arthritis (not MS) and have just started a new injectible because the last one was giving me symptoms of lymphoma. What fun. Seems like you’re making it work, so yay for that!

I don’t know if you like Xfiles but they are on Amazon Prime. I finally figured out the episodes I was an extra on (most of the time you can’t see me though). Season 4 The Field Where I Died and Season 5 Unusual Suspects 🙂

izombie (which isn’t streaming but is likely to get rerun later this summer), halt and catch fire, masters of sex (new season starts next month), and wet hot American summer’s prequel will be available next month too. Catastrophe on Amazon.

My Netflix go-to has been Murder, She Wrote. I remember watching these as a kid, and I love them just as much now that I have rediscovered them.

  13. June 25, 2015 at 10:25 pm

We are watching Bones, Murder she wrote, Stargate and Grimm. All either on Netflix or Amazon prime.
Second to Midsummer Murder and we enjoyed Endeavor.

You should totally add utz crab chips to cushion that yarn on its journey.

One of my all-time favorite series is streaming now — Gilmore Girls. it’s such smart comedy. I also really like Criminal Minds. and pretty much any BBC series…the bletchley circle, MI-5, prime suspect…so many more but those are what I can think of right now. That is a beautiful color of yarn…and imperfections are beautiful!

It’s been around for a while, but have you watched Once Upon a Time? I like how they include the different fairy tale characters.

    GIRRRRRRRL

IF like period drama like I do (HELLLOOOOOOOO, Austen anything – and Downton Abbey), watch The Paradise. It’s excellent and costuming is great and a ringing is good and I just love it.

Additionally? My guilty pleasure is RuPaul’s Drag Race, for the brainless, don’t-tell-your-intellectual-friends fluff. I can’t help it. If I have deadlines it will just push me through.

Hulu has the largest collection of Classic Doctor Who. 413 episodes. Just sayin’. If the good Doctor doesn’t float your boat, there’s Shelley Duvall’s Faerie Tale Theatre, Red Dwarf, Lark Rise to Candleford, Twin Peaks, and too many Criterion Collection movies to name them all, but my favorite is Jean Cocteau’s Beauty and the Beast.

I’m not sure if it is available on US Netflix, but Strange Empire is compelling viewing. Mid-1800s drama about women surviving in a frontier town.

on Hulu, I’ve been watching Wayward Pines which is creepy and mysterious. Also Whispers started creepy and seems a tad devilish and has taken a turn for good which was completely unexpected.

    • July 1, 2015 at 9:43 pm

Oooh, I’m watching Wayward Pines! It’s super good, too. But Watchers is new, and going on the list. Also, congratulations! You won the Great Yarn Giveaway this week. Drop me a line and I’ll send you your yarn!

On Hulu, Wayward Pines is mysterious and so engaging. Whispers is creepy and entangled and seemed like it was devilish but took a turn for good that was surprising so I’m not sure where it’s going. Both are new shows so are freshly unraveling.

Also, if you like Nashvillle, Empire is the rap/soul version and it’s so good. On Hulu.
