What I love love love about my new watch is that it looks like a 1970s hotel alarm clock. That, and that I can look at my time and the time back home simultaneously.
This trip and the supplies for it permeate my entire life right now. I wear boots everywhere. I carry everything I need in BDU- style cargo pants. I carry a knife again. I’ve stopped wearing makeup or non- essential jewelry. My bookmarks are mine identification training cards.
It is comforting, this stripped- down life. Clean, simple, honest. I feel more like myself than I have in a while. I listen to myself talk and I am so pleased to hear that gentle boardroom lilt has left my voice. I speak my mind again. I cannot imagine going back.
